We seized the chance to meet Douglas Kennedy, that most French of American authors, during one of his rare lightning stopovers in Paris.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Douglas Kennedy admits that his relationship with time verges on the pathological. He very nearly scolded us for being ten minutes early <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 when for once, as journalists, we were proud not to have kept anyone waiting! But we settled down and ended up having a laidback discussion, with the author opening up on whisky, cigars, his family as well as his latest novel. Next came a photo session and a good cigar. As our interview reached its conclusion, we leaned on a bridge over the Ourcq canal [Ed: a canal built between 1802 and 1822 that has become a popular tourist destination in north-eastern Paris] and struggled to say goodbye <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 no one wanted to break the mood.<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n

The first thing you see, on the left as you enter his apartment, is an open-plan kitchen, known in France as an American kitchen. An array of whisky bottles gleams on the shelves.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"\"\u201cAfter a busy day, it\u2019s a relief to mellow out with a cigar and a very good whisky, like Laphroaig\u2014but it must be a fifteen-year-old \u2013 or Bunnahabhain, a Nikka Coffey Grain, or something Japanese. Or perhaps a Domfront Calvados [Ed: a Normandy AOC covering the Domfront terroir in the Calvados region of France], a spirit made from apple and pear. I enjoy smoking a cigar in the evening with a digestif<\/em>, sometimes at four in the morning. I\u2019m a vampire, a night owl. I was an anxious teen, and took up smoking at the age of fifteen. I\u2019d smoke like a chimney while I wrote my earliest plays. Then, when I was 32 and had just finished my first book, I had a health scare in Dublin. The doctor told me: \u201cIt\u2019s your choice.\u201d So I stopped. But in 2000, after I\u2019d finished writing The Pursuit of Happiness, a friend gave me a Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure N\u00b0\u00a02. It blew me away. Since then, I\u2019ve smoked a cigar a day, which I generally buy at my favorite Parisian cigar shop, La Tabati\u00e8re Od\u00e9on. Here, I only smoke Habanos, but it\u2019s more complicated in the States. I hope the laws on Cuban cigars will change, along with others. I tend to smoke alone \u2013 it\u2019s a time for quiet reflection. I don\u2019t have<\/em> to smoke to be able to write. I like to stroll around the streets with a cigar in my hand. My favorites are Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchills and Bolivar Robustos \u2013 they\u2019re pretty strong. Sometimes, I\u2019ll allow myself an extra cigar, something more modest, in the afternoon. It might be a little H. Upmann. Since I travel a lot, I always carry around some cigars in a humidified pouch to keep them fresh.\u201d<\/p>\n

We advise him to buy himself a travel humidor.\u00a0Then, on the right, we see a wall of shelves filled with books, classical music and Jazz CDs, and photos. Everything is impeccably ordered, like the rest of the apartment. \u201cI don\u2019t like mess,\u201d Kennedy admits.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cThese are my children. My son Max lives in Florida. He\u2019s become a photographer, despite his disability. And this is my daughter Amalia, who lives in LA. She\u2019s an actress and she also writes. They\u2019re Irish-Jewish Americans like me, and Anglo-American like their mother. They speak with a British accent because they grew up in London. Being a father is a huge responsibility, but it\u2019s wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eventually we sit down on a cozy sofa. Designer furniture creates a comfortable-chic atmosphere. Music plays in the background, and we ask if he\u2019d mind turning it off. Espressos are served on the coffee table.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cI feel\u00a0perfectly at ease anywhere. I can fit in, although I\u2019m still Douglas Kennedy! My first place in Paris was a 300 sq ft bachelor pad in Saint Germain des Pr\u00e9s. I had a lot of interesting experiences there, many of them very pleasant. Then I bought this one in the 10th<\/sup> Arrondissement, which was still a working-class neighborhood back then. I did the same thing in New York. I have a good eye for a deal. I like good design, along with a certain simplicity. My dad was in the Marines \u2013 so I make sure to make my bed every morning! My only luxuries are cigars, music and films. I don\u2019t own a TV. Nor a Porsche (laughs). Just a 4 x 4 in Maine. In Paris, I take the metro or the bus. People quite often recognize me. I don\u2019t mind. We exchange a few words. I try to be gracious.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I love my life, I love my freedom. I travel all the time and I organize it all myself. I don\u2019t have an agent or an impresario, just an assistant in Maine. I divide my time between Paris, New York, Montreal \u2013 where my second wife lives, she\u2019s a shrink \u2013 Maine, Berlin and London. It\u2019s the perfect system because there\u2019s no danger of getting into a rut. The trouble with marriage is everyday life. We don\u2019t have much time in our lives, so why complicate things? My real home is New York. I was born there in 1955 but I took off in 1977 for family reasons. I decided to come back and live in the US because it\u2019s my country, these are my fellow citizens. At least the 100 million Americans, out of 350 million, who have a passport. The rest \u2013 Middle America \u2013 are still deeply Christian conservative
\ns who don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on in the rest of the world\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

The phone rings. Our host gets up to answer. When he comes back, he takes up the conversation where he left off. <\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cEveryone suffers at some point in their life, we all go through hard times. You just have to get through it, find a balance, face things. That\u2019s one reason why I write. My family\u2019s a mess. That\u2019s why I left, on March 18, 1977 \u2013 I\u2019d just got my Bachelors Degree in American History and I took off for Luxembourg, then Paris, then Dublin. I\u2019d had a scene with my father, but it wasn\u2019t melodramatic. Our relationship was never straightforward. In 2001 when I was 46, things took a turn for the worse and he cut off contact altogether. I say, you can\u2019t change people \u2013 so I write, all the time. Except for the ten days, three times a year, when I disconnect completely from the world and block it out. I\u2019ve just finished my eighteenth book \u2013 actually my thirteenth novel. It\u2019s a great American saga set in the 1970s and 80s, all about a family and all the secrets they keep from each other. I haven\u2019t got a title yet. I quite often think of the title after I\u2019ve finished the book. It\u2019s being published in the States next year.\u201d<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s a wrap. Douglas has another interview afterwards. We just have time to take a few pictures in the stairwell, then a few more in the building\u2019s little courtyard garden. There he takes out one of the cigars that the IADC has given him, in its munificence. It was a Habano, a Por Larra\u00f1aga Opera\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What\u2019s the verdict?<\/strong><\/p>\n
