\u201cWe are very proud to represent such a prestigious brand in the Benelux region, but I would have preferred to see Davidoff hire five more people here and thus demonstrate that our sector is growing,\u201d Fred Vandermarliere, CEO of VCF-Oliva, told L\u2019Amateur. \u201cUnfortunately, this decision shows that our industry is under pressure and that governments are destroying jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a letter obtained by L\u2019Amateur, dated August 18 and addressed to the \u201ccustomers and partners\u201d of both groups, Oettinger Davidoff and Vandermarliere Cigar Family announced they were \u201cjoining forces in the Benelux region,\u201d even though the decision appears to be more of a withdrawal by Davidoff.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe strengthening of tobacco regulations in Belgium has a significant impact on both retail performance and wholesale activity,\u201d explains the letter, jointly signed by Tom Ryhiner, Vice President Europe of Oettinger Davidoff, and Fred Vandermarliere, CEO of VCF Cigars.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe latest regulatory measures in Belgium include the ban on displaying cigars (in effect since April 2025)<\/a>, the introduction of plain packaging starting in June of this year<\/a>, and the ban on smoking lounges planned for 2027,\u201d the text notes. \u201cFurthermore, the Netherlands will also introduce plain packaging starting in January 2027.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn light of the rapid evolution of this regulatory framework and following a thorough analysis of the Benelux market, Oettinger Davidoff has decided to partner with Vandermarliere Cigar Family (VCF Cigars),\u201d it continues. \u201cFrom January 1, 2027, Oettinger Davidoff will entrust the distribution of its entire product portfolio in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg to the expertise of VCF Cigars.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a result, the Davidoff of Geneva office for the Benelux region will close by the end of 2026. According to our information, the Brussels office currently employs eight people, only some of whom are expected to be retained by VCF.<\/p>\n

The Swiss group has already significantly reduced its presence in Belgium in recent months, notably by closing the two Davidoff stores in Brussels last May.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
