No press release, no explanation.<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">British American Tobacco (BAT), the British giant, no longer has any presence in Cuba. Last February, it sold its 50% stake in Brascuba, a cigarette-manufacturing joint venture created in 1995 with the Cuban state. The shares were sold to Tabagest S.A., a company linked to Tabacuba and already the holder of the other half of the shares.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Neither BAT nor the Cuban authorities issued any statement about the exit, which is buried deep in the British group&#8217;s financial reports.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Brascuba was founded in 1995 as a joint venture between the state tobacco monopoly Tabacuba and the Brazilian company Souza Cruz, a BAT subsidiary since 1914. Since 1996, the company has produced the Popular brand. Later, under licence from Habanos S.A., it also manufactured cigarettes under the Cohiba, H. Upmann and Romeo y Julieta brands, for the domestic market and for export to more than 20 countries.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to BAT&#8217;s 2025 annual report, the sale agreement was concluded on 19 December 2025. The British group was to receive $25 million for its shares and $35 million for the sale of trade receivables, all settled in euros.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The group had booked \u00a3231 million in impairments before the sale, and its 2026 half-year report shows a net charge of \u00a312 million. BAT now has no voting rights, no management authority and no exposure to the company&#8217;s future results.<\/p>\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>A decision that predates the Trump sanctions<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This exit is not, however, part of the recent wave of Western companies leaving the hotel and mining sectors. The intention to leave Cuba first appeared in BAT&#8217;s 2024 annual results, following an undated &#8220;strategic review&#8221;, along with a first impairment of \u00a374 million. It came more than a year before the tightening of US sanctions in May 2026, after which Meli\u00e1 and Iberostar gave up managing hotels and Sherritt suspended its direct participation in its nickel joint ventures.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This exit comes against a backdrop of recurring cigarette shortages, with production at the Brascuba plant in Mariel disrupted in early 2025 before, according to Tabacuba, a return to full capacity.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">BAT has given no explanation. Its reports merely describe its Cuban business as of little significance to understanding its results.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The British group does not say who controls Tabagest, but Cuban sources describe it as the company of the state-owned Tabacuba group that holds its stakes in the tobacco joint ventures, including Habanos S.A.
